CarboREM aims to design and build innovative industrial plants for the treatment of sewage sludge, digestate and organic waste (e.g. organic fraction of solid waste, agro-food waste).
The technology developed by our research team at the University of Trento is an innovative process for the valorisation of wet organic waste (eg sewage sludge and organic fraction of solid waste) called hydrothermal conversion (acronym HTC, hydrothermal carbonization). During the HTC the waste is transformed into a solid material, the hydrochar, which can be used:
As a biofuel for energy production
As soil improver
As Advanced Carbon Material, in particular as an adsorbent for pollutants in water, gases, contaminated soils and sediments.
