Bryomolecules

The project focuses on the study and valorisation of bryophytes, a group of plants widespread in Europe but still little known, which includes mosses and liverworts. These plants have the ability to produce important bioactive compounds, potentially usable as natural ingredients for cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

In particular, the project aims to determine, for the first time, the chemical profile of over 100 European bryophyte species and to identify the genes responsible for the production of active compounds, with the goal of producing such substances in sufficient quantities for pharmaceutical and cosmetic testing.

The study promotes the sustainable development of new natural products derived from wild European plants, using cutting-edge techniques that have no negative impact on biodiversity or the environment. In this way, European companies will be able to use the active compounds extracted through sustainable production methods in controlled environments, minimizing environmental impact and contributing to biodiversity conservation by reducing the need to collect these plant species from the wild.

The BRYOMOLECULES project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Framework Programme for Research and Innovation under grant agreement no. 101135305.
