Creating Bio-based Value in the Alpine Space

AlpLinkBioEco Final Conference
Published on:
31 December 1969

The transition from a fossil-fuel based to a bio-based economy is considered a driver for regional competitiveness, high value-added businesses and jobs, as well as crucial to reach the objectives of the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Creating Bio-based Value in the Alpine Space

The Regions of the Alpine Space have important stocks of biomass resources, the knowledge and technology to develop sustainable solutions in several sectors, such as wood, agrofood, green chemicals and bio-based materials. For these reasons, the shift towards a bio-based economy represents an opportunity that should be seized.
The Value Chain Generator software was developed to boost this shift, assisting Project Partners in creating intra-regional as well as cross-regional new business opportunities and to fully exploit the potential of the Alpine Space actors in the field of circular bio-based economy.

Through the Value Chain Generator, the Partners gathered interesting and valuable pilot experiences (called biolinks) and faced several challanges: Can bio-based inputs replace fossil-fuel-based ones in existing production processes? Can an opportunity that works in a neighbouring region be implemented at home? Can concrete actors be identified to move from ideas to action? Can suppliers or buyers from overseas be replaced by local alternatives?

To capitalize on synergies and complementarities developed during AlpLinkBioEco, a Masterplan for a Joint Bioeconomy Strategy in the Alpine Space has been drafted.
